We’re best friends first, total opposites yet somehow perfectly in sync, and 15 years later we’re still obsessed with each other.

Derek and I grew up together and went to middle and high school together — but this was not a childhood-sweethearts situation. In high school, he dated my best friend and we actually hated each other. Years later, we both ended up back in our hometown while everyone else went back to college. With no one else around, we started hanging out every day… and somehow, the person I couldn’t stand became my best friend and then my person.
What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple?Our favorite memory is our tiny first apartment. You could stand in one spot and see the whole place. Every night, we’d squeeze onto one little couch with our dog and cat and watch TV. He worked at a hardware store, I was a waitress, and we had almost nothing. Now we’ve built a whole life, but the best part is we fell in love when all we had was each other.
What would you do with $20,000?We’d do the very adult thing first and pay off some debt — then we’d take our family on a vacation. Just the five of us, making memories with our kids while they’re still little enough to think hanging out with us is fun.
