We met at a bus station in Little Rock, AR, on 11/2/60. Benita,19, was buying a ticket. G.A., 21, freshly home from the Navy, noticed her in a purple sweater. He thought, “WOW!” & gave her a wink as he sold her a ticket. Benita called her friend & said, “I just met the man I’m going to marry!” True to his charm, G.A. bought her a Coke each day during his break. We got engaged on 12/12/60 & married on 3/14/61. We honeymooned at a brand-new motor lodge complete with air conditioning!
What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple?Our first Christmas together will always be our favorite memory. Benita was five months pregnant with our first baby. Her parents drove from Louisiana with the greatest gift, a 17” Westinghouse TV. We had a tiny 24” Christmas tree in our first tiny apartment, but it felt like a castle. We didn’t have much, but our home was overflowing with love, hope & excitement of starting our family.
What would you do with $20,000?We'd finally take our dream vacation to Mackinac Island - or, as we like to call it, "Disney World for Old People!" Together is our favorite destination.
