Connect How did your love story begin?

We first crossed paths in kindergarten, growing up just blocks apart. After 6th grade, life carried us down separate winding trails. Sixteen years later, fate tugged an invisible string when we both landed in San Diego, joined the volleyball community, and attended its annual onesie bar crawl. There, Derrick spotted me by a pool table in a dino onesie. From that moment on, we were inseparable. Bound by volleyball, juggling, and joy for life’s silliness, we discovered a love that was meant to be.

What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple?

The night we re-met, we reminisced about childhood memories, especially the joy and whimsy of 6th grade. We soon discovered we both knew how to juggle and began learning to partner juggle six balls together. The first time all six fell into rhythm felt like pure magic and sparked something special between us. Juggling taught us communication, trust, and teamwork. Today, we teach juggling workshops, sharing both the skill and the story of how it helped us grow stronger together.

What would you do with $20,000?

This gift would help us continue our education and expand our ability to serve others. I (Derrick) am pursuing my Master’s in Occupational Therapy, and Sarah hopes to earn her Master’s in Nursing. We both find purpose in helping people live healthier, fuller lives, and advancing our education will allow us to make an even greater impact. This money would be an investment not only in our future, but also in the many individuals and communities we hope to serve throughout our careers.
