Connect How did your love story begin?

Our love story began at the West Texas State University Bible Chair, where two young people had no idea God was starting something that would shape the rest of our lives. I was in the library winning a game of Farkle, and I am competitive—but then Gamae’ walked in, and I saw the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I left that game, told her a little white lie to start a conversation, and she saw through it instantly. The rest, as they say, is history.

What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple?

We have shared so many favorite memories, and somehow every year gets better. But Christmas 1985 stands out. Her family was out of town, my family was scattered, and I was broke and alone. Gamae’ talked her family into ending their vacation early so she could come home and be with me and I would not be alone. That sacrifice showed me she was the one. For more than 40 years, we have kept choosing each other’s needs with that same kind of love.

What would you do with $20,000?

We would give a portion to our church, because faith and service are at the heart of who we are. With the rest, we would travel and take our family with us. Some of our greatest joys have come from shared adventures, laughter, and making memories together. We would use the prize to bless others, celebrate the life God has given us, and create new stories with the people we love most.
