Deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom, we were strangers until a dusty bus ride back to our compound. Then came the Great Laundry Incident. In a tent packed with fellow troops, his laundry bag was handed over. Perched gloriously on top for everyone to see? A pair of boxers covered in tiny, majestic rubber ducks. I instantly cracked jokes, he laughed, the tactical ducks survived the roast, and the rest is history. We've been inseparable ever since, and we still have the boxers!

Pinning down a favorite memory is impossible. The military kept us apart so much that whenever we finally reunited, we didn't care what we were doing—even if it's just arguing over whose turn it is to cook or wash dishes. Every hard-won second together became our favorite baseline. We don't have one single golden memory; we have a beautiful mosaic of stolen moments, goodbye hugs, and a deep, chaotic appreciation for the simple luxury of just being in the same room.

We should be responsible. Should. Our retirement hobby farm needs a tractor and fence repairs. But after decades of strict military orders and early roll calls, responsibility sounds exhausting! So, instead of buying stuff for the farm, our hearts say: buy a massive map, throw a dart, and flee! We want a cross-country road trip entirely on our own terms.
