How did your love story begin?

We were in a staff meeting and when it was over, he shook my hand and the static electricity from the old carpet shocked us both! We were not expecting that and we laughed. He asked me to go bike riding. I didn’t tell him I had a little boy and he brought two bikes with a child seat not on my bike but his!

What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple?

Our Adoption Day for our eldest son! Our chosen son’s adoption day when he was 16 years. The foster children we have loved. Our time in Germany as both of us were soldiers. Our 37 years in Leavenworth working nonprofit for women and children in domestic violence, creating the SafeKids Children’s Center in Leavenworth which still supports the community social services and in the prison systems as addictions counselors.

What would you do with $20,000?

I truly don’t know. I have never had that kind of money issue before. I like to buy socks and burgers for our homeless friends and pass them out. Sometimes we simply load them in our car and drive them to shelters because they don’t have transportation. Some people say that it’s dangerous but we have been poor and homeless in the Army and lived in a tent for several months when I was 3 months pregnant with our second baby. Our boy thought it was wonderful because the Germ circus was camping too!
