Connect How did your love story begin?

We met at Rumors Cabaret—Shelby in a “Show Me Your Titos” shirt. I joked, she said, “Guess my name—it’s a car that starts with S,” then vanished into the stall. I panicked—Subaru? Nope. Shelby, like the Mustang from Gone in 60 Seconds. We danced, kissed, and ended up at her place. Next day, we hit the farmers market and made tomato soup—now our favorite dish to cook together. From wild nights to cozy kitchens, we’ve been diving deep ever since.

What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple?

After 9 months living with her parents for cancer treatment hours from home, we were finally moving into our new place in Bellingham WA after being away for so long. Unpacking in the kitchen, music on, Shelby suddenly went quiet—her phone lit up: She was cancer free. We cried happy tears, held each other, and took a quiet moment just for us. Then we danced, called our families, and felt the weight lift. For the first time in a long time, the future felt ours again.

What would you do with $20,000?

We’d use the $20,000 to finish paying off Shelby’s medical bills, fund our wedding, and buy our first home. After everything we’ve been through, it already feels like we’re married—so close and connected. But I (Sam) have wanted to make it official since day one. Being able to settle down in a home we own after saying our vows would mean the world especially in this new chapter of good health and happiness
