Seth and I had both just moved to Phoenix - me for my neurosurgical residency, and him for Air Force training in his new jet. Venturing out to explore, we both wound up at a bar downtown. He made a bold first move by knocking my beer out of my hand and onto my shirt. He was so apologetic and offered to buy me a new one - “I’ll have what you’re having,” I said. In a risky choice, he returned with an IPA for each of us. To his surprise, I love craft beers! We’ve been laughing in love ever since.

We’ve been lucky to explore many incredible places together. A memory that stands out is seeing our favorite band, Odesza, at the Gorge in Washington. It was especially meaningful because during a stretch of long distance-when Seth had just moved for his Air Force commitment-our very first weekend reunited was spent seeing them live. Odesza has held a special place in our hearts since. We camped at the venue surrounded by a breathtaking view, and shared unforgettable sunsets. It was pure magic.

If we won, we’d celebrate the way we started - maybe not by spilling beer this time, but definitely with some good laughs and a little adventure. With deployments and residency, we’ve spent our fare share of time apart. But the large majority we would put towards building our future together. Military and resident salaries are limiting! Mostly, we’d just feel incredibly grateful to everyone who saw something special in us.
