Axel’s cousin Lisbeth, Nycky’s best friend, introduced us. We noticed similar interests and we were both bird parents. What started as a wholesome friendship turned into a slow connection. Although we built a strong bond, we had hardships that didn’t allow us time to see each other. Axel remained patiently caring throughout Nycky’s hospitalization; months after, Axel asked to be her boyfriend with handcrafted flowers in her favorite colors, books, and an embosser saying “library of Nycky”.

We started dating December 1st and Nycky invited me to meet her family for new years. I was nervous at first because she’s from a bigger family than mine but much to my surprise, everyone embraced me with open arms. We really cherish this memory because it was a night filled with joy, dancing, and spending time with those you love. At midnight we huddled around the bonfire and took time to think about the upcoming year, I realized then with who I wanted to spend it with.

We have immigrant parents who sacrificed a lot for us, and we are eternally grateful for everything they have done. We would use the money to help pay off their debt and give them peace of mind so they could focus on their future. With the rest of the money we can also pay off student debt and be able to start our journey as a couple without financial burden. We are working towards making our own non-profit organization in Harlem to give back to the community, and the money could be a headstart.
