Connect How did your love story begin?

In 2013, while finishing her undergrad in Portland, Kristine was set to start a master’s in human sexuality in Michigan. At the last minute, she sensed it wasn’t the right fit. A final search led her to a more appealing human sexuality program at SF State. Feeling a strong pull to the Bay Area, she made the switch. Two weeks after moving to SF, both on OK Cupid, she met MikaL for their first date and they've been inseparable since.

What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple?

Mikal had always been a romantic partner, so Kristine was used to the love and thoughtful gestures. When he planned a downtown Portland scavenger hunt just to invite her on a trip to Mexico, she didn’t suspect a proposal. In Mexico, while skinny-dipping under the moonlight, Mikal ran to shore—and returned with the ring hidden in his undercarriage so she wouldn't notice. He broke up with her and said, " I don't want to call you my GF anymore... I want to call you wife.. will you marry me?"

What would you do with $20,000?

With $20,000, we’d chase experiences that deepen our connection. We’d travel somewhere new, get inspired, and come home to upgrade our couples’ cabin making it a little more magical—maybe a wood-fired tub under the stars or an outdoor oven & kitchen for slow, shared meals. We’d use the rest to keep life fun, a little spontaneous, and full of stories we’ll be laughing about for years to come.
