We live in The Sweet Between—where joy and struggle meet, and love carries us through ALS, caregiving, and every tomorrow.
We would like to thank you for supporting Maceo and Maya Carter in this year's competition. Your participation allows us to aid both the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Oceana in their respective missions to support hunger relief and ocean conservation.
Our love story is one of faith, fire, and fierce devotion. Maceo and I met over 20 years ago as artists, and over time, we became each other’s peace. After his ALS diagnosis eight years ago, our love didn’t wither — it deepened. We’ve raised three sons in the tension of joy and hardship, laughter and caregiving. He fights daily to stay, and I stay to fight beside him. We are not just surviving — we are choosing love every single day, building legacy in the sweet between. Ours is not just a story
What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple? One of our favorite memories is the night we stayed up putting up Mary J. Blige posters outside Constitution Hall. Back at my apartment in Arlington, we ordered pizza and talked for hours—really, days. From that night on, we never stopped talking. Through every challenge, he’s been right there. And when I topped his mom’s mac and cheese? He knew I was the one.
What would you do with $20,000?We’d finally give Maceo the rest he deserves by helping him retire from work. I’d invest in our dream — building The Sweet Between, a wellness space for caregivers and families like ours. We’d pay some bills, take our boys somewhere peaceful, and keep showing that love — even through ALS — can still bloom, restore, and provide.
