However, it would be the moment we first said “I love you.” It wasn’t some grand event—just the two of us, half-laughing, half-nervous, saying it at the same time. It’s a memory we go back to when life feels heavy, because it reminds us how far we’ve come and why we still choose each other everyday.

We’re both in school, chasing the dreams we’ve put on hold to keep our families afloat during their hardest of times. As the eldest, we’ve carried more than our share—me caring for my sick father, him working long hours to support his. It’s delayed milestones, but not our hope. We’d use this to finally start saving for a home, and to give back—because we understand the pain of having nothing. With love and purpose, we just want to build a life we’ve both fought so hard for.
