Married 12 years, we overcame borders and marriage bans to be together. Proof that love (and a little courage) can change everything.
You decide who wins $20,000 and appears in Variety magazine as America’s Favorite Couple
Our love story began May 9th 2010, at the romantic and charming Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on the Santa Monica Pier. I (Jason) was a server; Damian was a tourist from Australia. He wasn't at my table, but something sparked the moment I saw him. As he was leaving, I secretly sent him a note that read, 'Text me sometime." An hour later, he walked back in and asked, "Are you Jason?" That bold leap led to a weekend in Vegas, years of long distance, and now a life together in California.
What is your favorite memory you've shared as a couple? Our favorite memory is the day same-sex marriage was fully legalized in California on June 26, 2013. After Damian made the leap to move across the world, we lived under constant pressure because his visa had a time limit. Our love was real, but the law kept it on borrowed time. That day changed everything. We could finally marry, stay together, and build a life without fear. It was the moment our future became truly ours.
What would you do with $20,000?If we won $20,000, we'd use it to support important family matters both abroad and here in the U.S. From health needs to living situations, there are loved ones who need care and we've been striving to be more present and able to help. After recently losing both of our fathers, being there for the people who remain has become even more important.
